Update: Monday October 2
The roof came off today. What more can I say?
Update: Tuesday October 3
The guys installed the ridge beam today, miraculously without the assistance
of a crane. Apparently it took six guys though. We got a call that our
air tub has arrived, which is good
because the only way to get it in the building is before everything is closed up. We
also chose our new shingle color: Oakwood. Strangely, the shingle manufacturer
chose to name all of its asphalt shingles after wood. The roof is well-tarped
for the night since there is a chance of showers.
Update: Wednesday October 4
Just a sprinkle of rain overnight. The new framing began in earnest, and
things are moving very quickly. The main exterior wall is up and the window
openings are framed. All of the new rafters are in place, including the box
for the chimney, and most of the sheathing is installed on the exterior and the
roof. The roofers may start stripping the rest of the roof as early as Saturday.
Update: Saturday October 7
On Thursday and Friday, our contractors finished the end walls of the dormer.
Today (Saturday) the insulation guys came by to blow insulation in the existing
room on the other side (sloped ceilings, eave space, and attic) and in the floor
above the garage. The shingles that we picked out were not in stock, so they
are delaying the roofing until next week. We're also looking at a couple of rubber roofing
options for the dormer, which turned out to be less than a 2 pitch.
I measured the final space and found that my estimates were off
by almost two feet -- so we actually have more room to play with now! I adjusted
the floorplan, making the vanity longer (4 feet instead of 3 feet) and also found
room to add a decent-sized linen closet in the bathroom. Jen and I also worked on
the lighting plan today so that we'll be able to give the electrician a rough-in
schematic. This turned out to be a little troublesome; we're worried about having
enough light in the new bedroom so are looking at some new options: adding sconces,
an overhead light, or possibly some track lighting.
Also, our plan for having two sconces above the tub may be kaput due to the building
code. We did find a good place to put a
built-in ironing center and we placed our
order for that. We made a quick visit to a stoneyard to look at some potential
vanity tops, ordered some samples of the tile we picked out earlier this summer,
and refined the size of the closets. I also continued plans for the vanity which
I will be building, and ordered hardware for that.
